Our Doctoral Journey

A Collection of Black Women's Experiences

It is widely recognized that Black women are underrepresented in doctoral programs and among doctoral degree holders globally. This is, undeniably, attributed to numerous systemic and institutional barriers that may hinder Black women from pursuing higher education, rendering them undervalued and overlooked. The late activist Malcolm X famously highlighted that the most neglected and disrespected person is the Black woman. Despite the ongoing neglect, persistent challenges, and barriers, Black women continue to excel, challenge the status quo, and remain among the most educated demographic, particularly in the United States. The remarkable determination exhibited by Black women in higher education certainly inspires future generations and, more importantly, challenges the oppressive structures of academic institutions.

The path toward earning a doctorate is often described as isolating and challenging. In this memoir, Black women from various parts of the world and diverse academic fields have come together because of their shared experiences and the desire to convey their stories to a broader audience. The second volume of “Our Doctoral Journey: A Collection of Black Women’s Experiences” functions as a resource and toolkit for Black women scholars, prospective doctoral students, and professionals. Within this memoir, you will encounter touching and powerful narratives of Black women who have danced with persistence and relied upon the strengths of their ancestors to overcome obstacles and contest the systems that aim to hinder them from achieving their doctoral degrees. This memoir will fill you with hope, joy, and a sense of community, belonging, and support. The adage holds true: "We are all that we’ve got.”
